Japan Research - Home Ec

Japan, Okinawa Island

Japan consists of 5 main islands, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu  and Okinawa. Honshu is considered the main island. Today I learnt a lot about Japan including one of the main islands Okinawa. Okinawa is a small island with a population of 1.38 million people and only being 1 199km². This small island is known for having their local people grow to be very great ages. Chiyono Hasegawa is one of the oldest residence recorded at 110 years of age she passed away in 2011. Not only do these peoples diet keep them healthy but they age incredibly.

Today we also learnt about rice. We asked why is rice the main staple in many regions. I found out that rice is actually really cheap and easy to grow. In hills and mountains rice to grown terrace. This system looks a lot like giant steps. White rice is actually quite bad for you and is almost like eating a spoon of sugar. Brown rice is recommenced more as it is more healthy for you. One other thing I learnt is that there are plenty types of rice, there are more than 40 000 varieties of rice including, Black Rice, Basmati, Brown rice, sticky rice and Jasmine rice which is known to be a Thai fragrance as some people describe it as Sweet Popcorn-like smell.

Do you know the type of rice used to make Sushi?

Have you been to Japan?

Have you seen the process of Mochi making? It is quite fascinating. Have you tried Mochi before?
