Kaitiakiranga in Science

What Is Kaitiakitanga?

Kiatiakitanga means guardianship and Protection. It is a way of managing the environment based on Maori world view. It is a way of looking after our own gardens and environment.

First Thoughts

Why caring for the environment is important for me.
Caring for the environment is important to us because the trees give us oxygen and fresh air, and we will die without any trees and they are getting cut down. If we a not respecting the environment then lots of the plants will die and then the air and lakes will get polluted.

Aim

In Science our goal for Kiatiakitanga is to provide well grown vegetables such as: Carrots, Beetroot and Silver Beat. We will wait a few weeks for the vegetables to start to spout then re-pot them into a bigger garden.

Method

Our  method to grow these plants is to firstly gather your Equipment, the thing you will need to start the  process will be:
1 cup or beaker with a sprout
1 egg carton or plant tray
Some potting mix or soil
Water
Any Seeds you would like to plant in this case Carrots
Gloves and Spade (Optional)
The second step is to grab some potting mix and fill all the egg carton. Poke a hole in the middle of your soil and plant your seeds Cover up the seeds and water them. Put them somewhere in the sunlight but not directly.

  1. Hi Lorelei,
I enjoyed reading your blog. You have made some great connections between Kaitiakitanga and why it is important for you in your life. I particularly liked how you said it was about respect. This is a Hornby High School value - what do you think kaitiakitanga might mean for you and your school?
