Accessing Water

How To Make A Homemade Water Filter

Aim: I want to create a water filter to cleans the dirty water.

Equiptment:

  1.5 litre soda bottle
Charcoal
Rocks
 Sand
Filter Paper

Large jar or Mason Jar (Optional)
Dirty Water

Method:

  • Clean the 1.5 litre bottle
  •  Cut the bottom of 2 inches or 5 cms.
  • Find a way to position the bottle so it is up right you can use a large jar or the bottom half of the bottle.
  •  Stuff some filter paper all the way to the bottom of the lid.
  • Add a large amount of charcoal, DO NOT use grill charcoal instead use homemade or activated Charcoal.
  • Add another filter paper and add another layer of sand.
  •  Then put some filter paper and a layer of rocks about the size of golf balls.
  • Lastly add the water and watch what happens .
  • When all the water has been through the filter, Boil the water first to get rid of the bacteria.

Before and After

 Results -

At the start it was foggy and muddy as we filtered it though it became more clear but there were still traces of fogginess in the water. I think next time I think we should use a filtering tube of charcoal because it helps the chemicals and  germs filter out. At the end after we boiled it, it tasted like normal water with a bit of sourness.
Discussion -
At the end it fogged up and tasted like mildly sour water I think because the lack of charcoal I did not go 100% right if we'd used more then I think it would have been more clear and tasteful.

Evaluation -
As I said before I think it would have work more better if we had put more charcoal in or just make a charcoal tube. A charcoal tube is a tube of charcoal which does the same as the original filter but makes it a lot more clear. The experiment I would like to do next time would have to try and make a Charcoal Filter.
