Case Study 1/2 - A.J Hackett

Aj Hackett

What did Hackett do to prove the safety of bungee-jumping?
He proved this by jumping off extreme obstacles such as the Eiffel Tower (this was done
illegally) and jumping from a helicopter from 380 meters.

What were some of the consequences for Aj Hackett in his bungee journey?
He became more successful and earned wealth. He has his own bungee jumping sites. He
has made up a successful business. People from around the world come to test their fears.

Where did Aj and Henry van Asch get their inspiration from?
They were intrigued with land diving rituals. In Vanuatu for centuries locals of Pentecost Island
threw themselves off huge towers with vine wrapped around their ankles. This represented
an old legend about a poorly treated wife who she too threw herself off a tall tree only to be
caught by vines, somehow leading her husband falling to his death. Women soon recreated
this event annually and shortly after men joined to prove their courage. This tradition is still
held up today.

Choose 3 dates you think are the most important  in the development of a commercial
bungy. Explain why?

1500:   Land diving commences on Pentecost Island Vanuatu. (The original bungee)

I think this is an important time in the commercial bungy business because it is the core to the
inspiration of bungee-jumping.

1990: AJ jumps for the first time from a helicopter, stretching the bungee 380 meters.

I think this is a good time, I think in this he wants to prove how safe his invention was. He may
have not have been allowed to run his business with how he proves the safety of his inventions
.
1999: The AJ Hackett Bungee company celebrated its millionth jump client after more than
ten years of existence and a dozen sites across the world!!

I think this is a great timeline because it celebrates his success and his worthiness.

“People have this notion of New Zealanders as being up for anything”. Quote from
Raybon Kan, NZ’s top 100 history makers.

How would AJ Hackett have contributed to this idea of New Zealand?

I think he contributed to this idea because of the crazy stunts he pulled and how sure and
fearless he was to pull any of them off. A normal person would not have jumped off a helicopter
or illegally jumped off the Eiffel Tower just to prove the safety of an invention. Any normal person
would have thought he was crazy to do this. What if a cable snapped safe?
