How To Make A Edible Sugar Crystal
Ingredients...
Sugar
Water
Food Colouring (Optional)
Food Flavouring (Optional)
Equipment...
x2 250ml Beakers
100ml Measuring Cylinder
Popsicle Stick
Something To Stir With
Bunsen Burner
Heat Proof Mat
Tripod
Gauze Mat
Cup (Styrofoam)
Lighter
Method... (Sugar Crystals)
With a 100ml Measuring Cylinder measure 50mls and pour in into a Beaker.
Set up the Bunsen Burner, Tripod, Heat Proof Mat and Gauze mat as usual ready to light.
Place the Beaker filled with water onto the Gauze Mat and light the Bunsen Burner.
While that heats up in another 250gms Beaker add sugar to the top line.
Wait about 10 minutes or until the water starts to boil.
After that gradually add small amounts of sugar and stir in between making sure that the sugar is fully dissolved before adding the next round of sugar.
Once all of your sugar is gone, add a drop of your desired food colouring and flavouring.
Mix until fully incorporated.
Into a styrofoam cup pour the syrup half way into your cup or evenly between how much people this experiment is for.
Dip a popsicle stick into water and roll it in some dry sugar.
Place the stick into the cup and lean it on the side. (if you are using glass use something to hold it up so it doesn't stick to the bottom)
Wait 2 weeks and if you followed the instructions correctly, your sugar crystals should have grown on the stick.
And VWALA!
Results...
When I took my sugar crystal out of my styrofoam cup I thought it was quite easy to remove as I took the blue crystal a saw a blue syrup left over & poured it down the drain, on the way out the gate I did not think how sugary the crystals would actually be. I did not like how sugary they were so I gave the leftovers to my friend.
