Butterflies - Patricia Grace

Today our teacher got us to read a short story written by Patricia Grace called Butterflies. When I was almost finish reading it I got concerned but as I read the rest it made more sense and I had another point of view. After we read the story we discussed  about the story. We answered a few questions to help us understand what our task was. Here is what I understand from reading the story.

Q - What is the meaning of the ending of the text?
A - I think the meaning of the ending of the story means that the butterflies
are going around eating their food from the garden.
Q - Which perspective and bias are active in the text?
A - The perspectives and bias that are active in this story are, how Patricia’s teacher
find that butterflies are beautiful and nothing is wrong with them. Then her grandparents
think they are more like pests that eat all their food they are trying to grow.
Q - What message is the author trying to get across?
A - The message I think the author is trying to get across is that sometimes you should
look at something from a different perspective and have a more open mind.
Q - Who is Patricia Grace? ( Do some research)
A - Patricia Grace is a Maori author, she writes novels, short stories and children books.
Her first published piece was “Waiariki” and was the first collection of short stories made
by a Maori woman.
Q - How do you think her perspective shaped the story?
A - I think her perspective shaped the story because she gave the reader the idea to have
a more open mindset. Instead of looking at one view. I also think it helped to make the
“little girl” have a reason for killing butterflies.
