In Social Studies we have been researching about The Treaty of Waitangi. I have learnt more about our past than before. I learnt that the treaty was basically made up over-night and that there are actually more than one copies of the treaty.
After all our research our next job was to develop a class treaty. The reason for this was to experience sort of what it might have been like in 1840 when they had to make up a treaty for a large group of people.
Our class worked in small groups at our tables and worked on the Terms and Agreements that would benefit our classroom in the best way possible. Once we had brainstormed we then made our Preamble and 1st, 2nd and third article. The preamble is the introductions of the treaty. It states the groups involved and the general reason of the treaty. The 1st article is about the power of the teacher in the classroom, the 2nd article is about the restrictions about uniform and behavior within the classroom and the last article, (article 3) states the freedom of the students in the classroom.
Once our small groups came up with their basic plan, we all got into a larger group and merged all of our treaty's together to a treaty we can all agree on and be happy with. I think our class worked well together with small arguments here and there but we all where happy with the outcome and are now waiting for the teachers response.
I think being in a large group can be challenging and I could image that there may have been arguments when the Treaty of Waitangi was written up. Working in a larger group than we were could be very difficult, in our small group it was still quite difficult for everyone to get their ideas in and be able to be heard while everyone was talking.
