The tone of a film affects the way we perceive or feel during or after a film. Tone in film literally means brightness. There are 3 main elements of tone, this consists of lighting, exposure and art directions.
Lighting is how you want to light the scene, whether that be high or low contrast in order to set a mood or give a different emotional experience towards a character. Exposure is how much light you allow into the camera. You could compare this to when pupils dilate in different light settings. Art Direction is how much tonal difference there is between your dress setting, props and wardrobe.
