Creating Acid Rain

Creating Acid Rain

Aim:
Creating acid rain and observing the effects

Equipment:
Petri Dish, Universal Indicator, Bromothynol blue, Calcium Carbonate, Petal/leaf, Apple, Blue Litmus Paper, Whey Boat, Spatula

Method:
Put a tiny whey boat in the centre of the Petri dish and surround the dish with a couple drops of Universal Indicator, Bromothymol blue, a spatula full of Calcium Carbonate, Blue Litmus Paper, A small piece of apple and a petal. Make sure no liquids are touching each other. In the centre dish put a small spatula full of Sodium Sulfite, after everything is set up add a couple drops of Sulfuric acid and close the lid.

Results:
The blue litmus paper and the universal indicator have turned red, about 10 minutes in nothing else has really changed.
Discussion:
The vapours from the sulfuric acid and sodium sulfite should effect its surroundings, changing the colour of somethings or tearing away at the apple skin.

Conclusion:
The colour change for the universal indicator and the blue litmus paper indicates that the vapours are very acidic and have about a ph from 1-4. In the end of the lesson not much changed in the rest of the objects. Next time I would have used a different colour leaf
