This Girl Is On Fire
For our next experiment our focus is around "Festival Of The Arts." We have agreed to construct a Clay mask to light on fire.
Equipment to:
2 Cups Baking Soda
1 Cups Cornstarch
1 Cups Cornstarch
1 1/2 Cups of Cold Water
Hand Sanitizer
Whisk Or Spoon
Bowl
A Face
Plaster Bandage
Vaseline
Chemicals
Plaster Bandage
Vaseline
Chemicals
Blue Flame - Copper Chloride
Turquoise Flame - Copper Sulphate
Red Flame - Strontium Chloride
Pink Flame - Lithium Chloride
Method For Mask:
1. The First step is to cut your bandages into strips (Not too big ) and soak them in water then remove the excess water from the Plaster Bandage
2. Spread a thin layer of Vaseline on your face and either use the Vaseline or hair spray to hold you hair back.
3. Layer the strips one by one making sure to not cover the nostrils. To get more detail cover the eyes and nose. Do about 2 layer till completely hardened.
4. Once the Plaster has hardened carefully wriggle the mask out and remove it from the face.
5. Once the mask it off put some or play dough in the nostril area so none of the clay will come out.
6. The next step you have to carefully pour the clay mixture in while it is still hot and still a liquid.
7. Wait for the mask to set, this step can take 24-48 hours. Ensure the clay has dried before removing the Plaster.
8. Now You are ready to paint.

8. Now You are ready to paint.
How To Make The Clay:
1. Mix together the baking soda and cornstarch into the pot and use a whisk or spoon to mix until well combine.
2. Stir in the water till you no longer see lump and the mixture is completely smooth.
3. Heat the dough mixture over a medium heat and keep stirring it to keep the liquid from sticking to the bottom.
4. Stir the dough until it thickens it will start to bubble then begin to form a ball after about 5 minutes of stirring. When it becomes difficult to stir remove it from the heat.
Method For The Fire :

Method For The Fire :
- For each colour get 1ml of the mentholated spirits
- Once you have the mentholated spirits in the small beaker get your chosen chemicals
- Get about a pea size of the chemical
- Put the chemical in the mentholated spirits and mix till the chemicals is fully disposed
- Once the mentholated spirits and the chemical
- all are ready pour it on the mask while spreading it around
- Once it is on the mask you are ready to light it on fire with a popsical stick

Results -
In the end we did not have time to light the mask on fire.
Putting the plaster Gauze on her face -
What I smelt - The gauze didn't smell like anything but it was very interesting.
What I saw - I saw a soggy white object that looked like paper
It was difficult to take off the mask once it had reached the drying time.
The next day we came in the mask was going to break so we had to build the mask up so it was strong enough to hold the clay (It takes about a 10 minutes for it to dry)
Making the clay -
While we were making the clay we had to keep adding more and more flour until it got to the right consistency to pour in the mask. Once it was in the mask we put it in the incubator for about 1 week before it was hard enough to take put off the mask
Discussion -
How did the mask go solid -
In order to make the mask go solid you would add water so that it becomes dehydrate again. The plaster of Paris gives off energy that is had stored and when setting into a solid provides an exothermic reaction
Exotheic - Heat that is leaving
What happened with the mask -

What happened with the mask -
With the mask we had to let it dry for it to be strong enough to pick up. It was kind of like paper mache with how you had to put it into the water and it goes all weird the dust turns into like liquid.
What happened with the clay -
With the clay it had to be thick otherwise when you put it in the incubator it won't form probably.
When you mix baking soda, flour and water it create like a dough form from the chemicals in the two dry ingredients mix together with water
When you put the mask in the incubator -
When we put the mask in the incubator it made the clay go harder and harder until it is solid

Evaluation
How did your experiment go - Overall the experiment went pretty well the mask worked and when we put the clay in it did not break the only bad thing was that we could not set it on fire
What was a success - The amount of work we got done that included making the mask and clay
What went wrong - That when we made the mask we did not cover my whole face so we needed to build it up
How could you fix it - By next time to go to the edges of my face, and to mage our time better so we could finish the experiment.
What experiment could we do to follow on -
Finding out certain chemicals makes the coloured fire.
